| Tips For Apple
Day Coordinators Of Individual Scout Groups:
© Contact the business(es) beforehand
to advise them them of the dates that your members plan to be there.
© Try to get a letter(s) from the business(es) that you'll be in front
of that specifies you as the only fundraising group to be there on
that weekend. You'll want to ensure that someone checks with the local
Guiding and Cadet organizations to prevent "Cookie Sales"
and "Tag Days" from interfering with our Apple Days event
on our weekend.
© Present appreciation parchments or thank-you cards to these businesses
within a week or so afterwards.
© If you are not using one of your sites this year, for whatever reason,
please make it known so that someone else can take advantage of it,
even just for this year only.
© If one of your sites is in front of a produce store, see what deals
they have before buying your supply of apples. Sometimes they offer
to donate your apple supply.
© When ordering your apples, make sure that you are getting this
year's crop, not last year's. If you team up with other Scout groups,
you may get a better deal.
© Schedule 1 hour or 1&1/2 hour shifts. Try to keep siblings together,
and make it known that families are welcome to participate.
© Each shift should have a mix of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, etc. Beavers
are the essential ingredient for generous donations. They are too
cute.
© Ensure that each site is provided with an adequate supply of apples,
throughout all the shifts.
© Supply each site with collection tins.
© Provide a sign-in sheet at each site with names and phone numbers
so that each shift will know who is next and what number to call,
in case someone forgets.
© We are not selling apples. We are giving out apples, hoping
for donations. This fact should be prominently stated on the sign-in
sheet.
© Supply cloths to each site so that the apples can be polished during
shifts. Most people appreciate that the apples are non-waxed, and
parent helpers are often happy to have something to do.
© Watch money tins carefully when suspicious characters are hanging
around.
© Be prepared for questions from the public. Make certain you have
Scouting information pamphlets (with a phone number) for your people
to hand out.
© Each member receives an Apple Day crest for participation (supplied
by their Scout group).
